BACKGROUND
Dave’s first career was in real estate development and project management. From 1983 to 1994, he held development and executive positions with The Beacon Companies, a leading Boston real estate firm. In the early 1990s, Dave created a consulting division advising commercial and institutional owners on complex facilities projects.

In 1994, he founded Dave Lash & Company with an initial focus on helping organizations to develop Internet strategies and create Web-based products. In 1997, the firm migrated into online learning and business education. Dave played a major role as project leader and “content architect” for Go Figure! – the first online learning course developed for United Technologies. Through his work in online learning, Dave began a long-term consulting relationship with the Kauffman Foundation.

Through Kauffman and other entrepreneurship organizations, Dave became part of a national research-based initiative to identify and disseminate patterns of entrepreneurial success to entrepreneurs and business leaders throughout the country. In this capacity, Dave worked with leading entrepreneurs, researchers, and educators, leading to his development of a toolkit called The PLUS Patterns, a research-based framework for business strategy and innovation. He has played a senior development role in the creation of new products, programs, and resources.

Dave is deeply committed to innovative education solutions as an anti-poverty and immigrant integration strategy. He is a co-author of The Turnaround Challenge, the influential 2007 research and report that presents a new framework for remedying failing high-poverty schools.

Dave is a popular public speaker and workshop leader on innovation, business improvement, and collaboration.

Dave blogs on innovation at SowingInnovation.com.

Grace Belfiore, Ph.D.

Grace is an education consultant with senior-level experience in practice-based research, concept and program design and development, writing, communications, and learning materials design. She is a co-author of The Turnaround Challenge: Why America's best opportunity to dramatically improve student achievement lies in our worst performing schools. Called “the bible for school turnaround” by Secretary of State Arnie Duncan, it has been downloaded over 200,000 times, has influenced federal Title 1 and Race to the Top policy, and is being used to develop turnaround strategies in dozens of schools, districts and states.

Building on the Turnaround research, Dr. Belfiore played a key role (with Dave Lash) in the planning, design, and grant writing for Buffalo Promise Neighborhood and other successful education initiatives.

Dr. Belfiore’s work on school reform with Mass Insight Education grew out of involvement in multi-year initiatives on standards-based reform (Building Blocks), and intervention strategies for at-risk high school students (Keep the Promise). She has worked on a range of efforts to ensure effective education for all students, from next generation learning and assessment (for Stupski Foundation) to analyses of highly resource-effective districts (for Standard & Poor’s School Evaluation Services unit). She has over 20 years of experience in the development and application of educational innovation, including creating an award-winning vocational/educational program for Coca-Cola and Schweppes, and founding a self-paced learning division of a major international publisher in England.
